Audition 101

Good morning everyone,

I am going to talk to you about auditioning and how to prepare well and do your best. I have another post on auditions and how to ace your audition, but, I feel like I know more about auditions from the last few months and there is more I can share with you. Also, before I start, I would like to share with you all some exciting news (also what kindof sparked the idea for this post). The exciting news is that I am going to be auditioning for Heathers the Musical in May!! I never thought I'd be able to do one of my favorite shows and audition for a dream role. I will be auditioning for Heather Mcnamara, due to my appearance, vocal range, etc. So, with that being said, let's start!

Appearance-

The best thing to wear to an audition is something fitted. Like skinny jeans and simple tee-shirt. This is because the casting director will be able to see what your real body shape looks like. If you wear baggy clothing, the casting team won't be able to see what you look like, to see if you are good for the character. If you would like, you can wear some dainty jewelry, but I don't reccomend anything bold and distracting. A small necklace, simple rings, a small bracelet, stud earrings are all fine. For makeup and hair, I would reccomend a very small amount of makeup, again, so they can see your actual appearance. Little foundation and one coat of mascara maybe. Hair should either be natural or down. If your hair is up, they wont be able to see the length of your hair. The casting team wants to know how long your hair is, so they know what they can do with it.

Preparation-

I'm pretty sure I talked about cold readings in my last post, but just to briefly mention, if you get your script early, REVIEW IT! Memorize it to the best of your ability, you will look more professional. Before you go to your audition, try to research your character as much as possible. For example, if you are auditioning for Eponine, watch videos on different people performing as her and it is good to watch the full musical if you haven't seen it yet. You can always watch it again, if you already have seen it too. Youtube is a great place to see different people from Broadway to community theatre doing Eponine or any other character. This way, you can analyze how to act when auditioning.

The waiting room and obvious things-

When in the waiting room be respectful, quiet and courteous to others. You never know who's watching, so a member of the crew might be watching in the waiting room to see who is respectful and easy to work with. Also, some obvious things to keep in mind are

-don't chew gum, it'll screw you up while your singing and talking and make you sound weird.

-bring a headshot, resume and sheet music, JUST INCASE. It'll make you look more proffessional and it's better to have them than not.

-Be honest. When the casting crew asks you about your background, don't lie. Tell the truth, because if you get cast, you will have to carry out those lies, which is hard and not fun.

-Be prepared to answer questions. Think of answers to some questions before you go into the audition room. Some common questions are, "Why did you audition for this character?" "Tell us about yourself." "Why are you auditioning for this show?" "What experience have you had in the past?" You can also google some common questions and just prepare some answers in your mind ahead of time.

-Don't be fake, but don't be rude. Don't act a certain way just to be cast, because they will cast you based on the way you acted. But, don't be rude. Be respectful, polite and positive when in the auditioning process, to show them that you are easy to work with.

Don't freak out-

If your going to your first audition or your just really nervous for an audition, use this technique. If you think about the fact that the casting crew has seen or will see over 30 people audition, then you won't feel as nervous. Although they are looking at your talent, they definitely won't be picking at every little flaw you have. Most likely, the casting crew has been in your place before, whether it was an audition, job interview or some other kind of interview, they will be understanding. So, don't sweat it and just breathe. The rest of the attendees auditioning are nervous too, so you will be fine! Just pretend like your not nervous and eventually you won't be, just smile and breathe.

Sheet music-

Okay, seriously sheet music is the most annoying thing ever. That is, if you don't have one of those memberships to buy it or sheet music books, etc. Whenever I google to find sheet music, it's so hard. Or I have to pay. So, I just want to briefly reccomend paying for a membership to one of the things online. Also, keep all your sheet music and scores from different shows and songs so you can get use out of them in the future.

Looking out for auditions-

I reccomend signing up for emails from theatres all around you so you get a notification/ email when there are new auditions coming up. It's good to know what's happening all around you and try anything you would like to try. I found out about Heathers from an email I was signed up for, so it's good to do that!

That's all for today's post. I hope you all enjoyed it and take these tips into consideration and think about them during your next audition. Let me know if you have any auditions coming up soon by leaving a comment on the blog page. My audition for Heathers is in May so I will for sure let you know how it goes!
